Generation counts differ between sources (one wine retailer calls him the sixth), but Rouzaud himself describes himself as just the seventh leader of a long story. The house’s origins go back to a company founded by a M. Dubois around 1776. Louis Roederer joined in 1827 and became owner in 1833, giving the house its name. He bought vineyards at a time when that was unusual, acquiring some of Champagne’s grand cru vineyards in the mid-19th century, a strategy that still defines the house. Russia became its great market, and in 1876 Tsar Alexander II commissioned a personal cuvée in clear crystal bottles, which was named Cristal.

The 20th century brought disaster and revival. The 1917 Russian Revolution wiped out the company’s main export market, and Camille Olry-Roederer rebuilt it, strengthening its vineyard holdings while other houses were selling theirs. She reintroduced Cristal in 1924. She led the house for the next 42 years after the death of her husband in 1932. Her grandson, Jean-Claude Rouzaud, became the first in the family to be formally trained as an oenologist, and he expanded the group into other regions, including California’s Anderson Valley, where Roederer Estate’s first release came in 1988.

Frédéric took over in 2006 and has built on that inheritance. He has expanded the group to 12 wineries from Bordeaux to California, plus a luxury hotel in the French Alps. He has also committed the house to sustainability. All of Roederer’s Champagne vineyards are now organic, and the 2012 vintage of Cristal was the first made entirely from biodynamically and organically grown grapes. Cristal’s scarcity is deliberate, since he has said he could easily double its output but chooses not to. Today Roederer has been named the world’s most admired Champagne brand for the seventh consecutive time, an honor Rouzaud credits to generations of collective work.
